Christian Obodo: Where is he now?

Image
Our relatively unknown footballer from Warri, Delta State, he last played as a midfielder for    Apollon Smyrnis F.C.  in Greece. Remember that guy from the national team that likes to dribble past opponents and run towards the opposite goal especially through the middle that's not Okocha? yes, that's him. Like almost every other Nigerian footballer, he had the unfortunate luck to be dragged into a transfer war between two clubs. What was last heard from him was that he was involved in a car accident that left his car totally wrecked but no report was made about the victims. We pray wherever he is, he gets things right Haven't downloaded our application yet? Check here

Wilson Oruma: The Second Jay Jay?

Image
The tale of this man is a sad one, once preferred to Okocha for his 'sensible' dribblings, he was tipped for success too. Why wouldn't he be?, he had, at least, won the 1993 FIFA under 17world championships as the captain and tournament top goalscorer, he was also part of the Nigerian team that won bronze at the 2002 and 2006 African cup of nations and was also part of the squad that won Olympic gold, but like every other Nigerian footballer, his career petered out relatively quickly. He represented clubs including but not limited to Bendel Insurance, Lens, Marseille, Guingamp, amongst others. What was most surprising was that after his retirement in 2010, he was no longer heard of until he reportedly lost close to Two (2) Billion Naira to a clergyman and was declared mentally unstable for six (6) years,.  Haven't downloaded our application yet, get it here

Segun Odegbami: Legend in his own right but remebered?

Image
Though less know and considerably not known amongst us new generation, this man was the epitome of Nigeria football, the second-highest goalscorer for Nigeria and a pioneer of youth football, his career spanned for more than a decade professionally before he transitioned into coaching and pioneering football in the country. His was a case of staying true to yourself, sadly, according to him, he vied for a position in the Nation's Footballing Body but lost due to unforeseen circumstances (a la Didier Drogba) and has, since then been in the background doing the little he can to promote grassroots football.   Haven't gotten our app? get it here

Samuel Okwaraji: Myth or Legend

Image
Man?, Myth?, or Legend?, this man was everything and some more while growing up, I had the unfortunate experience of being one of the peddlers of the false information that he died of hitting his foot against a palm tree's stump while trying to score Nigeria's 99th goal against India. Whether you believe it or not, this and many more was what we heard growing up and it stuck by us, one thing was true in this rumor though, he died while playing for the national team, albeit, of congestive heart failure at a world cup qualification match in the year 1989 at the Lagos National Stadium. His was a tale of unfulfilled promise and we pray for his family, even as they might have gotten over the loss, get someone better that will do better than him for them. Yakubu (The Yak) Aiyegbeni: Unassuming Legend

Image
Our very own hero we like to hate, the best impression of a failed Nigeria's national team expedition at an international tournament, The Yak went into the tournament hoping to make the country proud but he did one better, he came back a legend albeit, for the wrong reasons, his miss at a gaping goal spelt the end for the national team's prospects according to some, but he amended this error by scoring a penalty afterwards, and would become the talking point for years to come, it's safe to say he never bothered representing Nigeria again. Funny enough, he had a relatively successful career at club level and is the third-highest African goalscorer in the premier league history (source: Wikipedia) and at present, though retired, he is currently working alongside FIFA   in conjunction with the FIFA legends programme. Here's to hoping he gets forgiven for that miss as the image in our memory remains. P.s. The views expressed in this article are the writers'. Haven...

Sunday Mba: Hero and Villain

Image
Our most recent hero is this man from Aba, Nigeria, he scored the winning goal for Nigeria at the 2013 edition of AFCON, he was also our nation's hero at the semi-finals victory over Ivory Coast. What is most surprising and the reason for the blatant heading above is the transfer saga that occurred right after the nation's cup. Apparently, two football clubs had a dispute over who owned him, and the rest, as they say, is history. He is currently planning his comeback to football after two years without a club. We pray he gets a new one soon before it gets too late, need I remind you he is 31 and past his prime, but for the sake of his family, we hope he finds something profitable soon. Rashidi Yekini: A Hero to remember

Image
Rashidi Yekini  (23 October 1963 – 4 May 2012) was a Nigerian  footballer  who played as a  striker . Wikipedia. This Towering Nigerian Footballer is known as the greatest striker to don the Nigerian Jersey as a number 9. His performance levels were so impressive (first Nigeria's goal at a world cup tournament) that every other footballer to wear the famous number nine (9) has always been compared to him. May his soul rest in peace  My hope is that the current incumbent, Victor Osimen would do better than him, at least score more than him in national colors.
